who’s to blame?

Michael Neill recently told the story of the supercoach Steve Hardison who was at a meeting with a senior leadership team of one of his clients. During the meeting, the CEO was demanding that someone admit to being at fault for a major purchasing error which had cost the company millions of dollars. After listening to each department head attempt to pass the buck to his or her colleagues, Hardison finally spoke up.
“It’s my fault,” he said. “I’ll take the blame for this one.”
When the surprised CEO asked him how he could possibly see himself as responsible for something that happened before he was even employed by the company, Hardison responded “Well, if anything is going to be created out of this, someone has to step up and take responsibility. And since it doesn’t really matter whose ‘fault’ the original mistake was, I figure it might as well be my fault. Now that we’ve agreed on who’s to blame, let’s move on to figuring out what we’re going to do to turn this around going forward.”
